'It was intentional': Court finds woman guilty of killing husband in Eldoret

A 37-year-old woman in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County was on Wednesday found guilty of killing her husband three years ago.

In his ruling, Eldoret High Court Judge Reuben Nyakundi said the prosecution had proved through a series of circumstantial evidence that Winnie Maina stabbed her husband to death on August 22, 2022 at their residence in Elgon View estate.

Justice Nyakundi rejected the woman's defence that she was provoked into committing the crime by the deceased,  using a kitchen knife, saying from the evidence presented in court she intentionally terminated the victim’s life.

The judge further said that by targeting the victim’s heart with a knife during the scuffle, the convict had shown clearly her intention was to end the life of her estranged husband.

According to the Judge, the survival chance of the deceased was almost zero after the convict stabbed him in the heart with a knife on the fateful day after a drinking spree from a club.

The prosecution through State counsel Mark Mugun had earlier urged the court to find the house wife guilty of murder.

She is accused of inflicting injuries to her 33-year-old husband, Wycliffe Miriti who later succumbed to the stab wounds at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret while undergoing treatment after a night of partying.

She denied killing Miriti who was a Senior Logistics Officer at an International beverage company based in Eldoret.

According to the police report, the convict rushed her husband who was in critical condition to the hospital in the family car but he succumbed to three knife stabs upon arrival at MTRH in Eldoret.

The woman will be sentenced on June 3, 2024.
