'It pains me deeply,' Raila mourns victims found in Mukuru dumpsite
Azimio la Umoja Coalition Leader, Raila Odinga has voiced his profound sorrow over the chilling discovery of several mutilated bodies at Kware dumpsite in Mukuru kwa Njenga slums on Friday.
The unsettling discovery of the bodies, all female and in various stages of decomposition, has ignited widespread concern among Kenyans, largely because the dumpsite is situated alarmingly close to Kware Police Station.
"It’s a sad and dark moment for Kenya, what we have witnessed in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, pains me deeply," said Raila in an X statement.
Raila Odinga also offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims discovered at the dumpsite, even as police work to establish their identities.
"To the families who have lost loved ones, accept my deepest condolences," he said.
The Azimio frontman likewise called for swift investigations into the unsettling find, urging police to bring the perpetrators to book.
"The perpetrators of these and other heinous acts must face the full force of the law immediately. The people of Kenya demand accountability," he said.
Homicide detectives took over investigations into the incident on Friday.
According to the Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin, the number of bodies retrieved from the dumpsite, which served as a former quarry, was six.
He added that the bodies, which were moved to the City Mortuary pending post-mortem, were wrapped in nylon papers and reinforced with nylon ropes.
According to the DCI,
preliminary investigations suggest a similar mode of killing for the deceased
persons.
“Homicide detectives and officers from the Forensics Division of the DCI are currently analyzing samples to identify the bodies. The area has been cordoned off and designated as a crime scene as the investigation continues,” said the DCI.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga subsequently ordered Acting Police Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja Kirocho to promptly initiate investigations into the incident.
In
a statement Friday, the DPP gave Kirocho 21 days to submit a report on the
same, further underscoring the gravity of the situation owing to the crime
scene's close proximity to the Kware Police Station.
"The ODPP is deeply concerned with these reports which
point to a grave violation of human rights considering that the said dumpsite
is only a few metres away from the police station," said Mulele.
"Pursuant to Article 154 (4) of the constitution the DPP
has directed that the Office of the Inspector General of the National Police
Service to conduct thorough investigation and forward the resultant file for
perusal within 21 days."
