Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia, who has served as the Deputy Governor of Meru County since 2022 has now assumed governor position.

This follows the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by the Senate in 2024, which was upheld in a court ruling on March 14, 2025.

Mutuma took oath of office at Mwendantu Grounds in Meru County on Monday. The ceremony was graced by leaders from in and out of the County.

Meru leaders say the first biggest assignment is for Mutuma to unite Meru County, which has been rocked by unending battles since the election of Mwangaza in 2022.

Majority Whip Jim Muchui earlier said the Ameru have suffered due to lack of leadership and stability, as the new Sherriff is highly expected to bridge the gap between the Assembly and Executive in the County.

“For the last two years Meru has been divided. His first responsibility is to see how he can unite the people of Meru and the leadership,” said Muchui.

“We also expect the Governor to immediately submit the supplementary budget in the Assembly because there is an itemized budget we did and the former governor blatantly refused to implement,” he added.

In August 21, 2024 26 senators voted to impeach Mwangaza on charges including on gross misconduct and violation of the constitution and other laws. 14 senators abstained, while four voted in her favour.

This was the third impeachment motion against Mwangaza to be tabled at the Senate.

Meanwhile, a petitioner has moved to court to dispute the swearing-in, terming it illegal.

The petitioner argues that the court breached provisions of Article 182 of the Constitution and sections 5 and 11 of the Assumption of the Office of the Governor Act, 2019 which provide the procedure and timelines to be adhered to on swearing in a new Governor.

Section 11 (2) of the Assumption of the Office of the Governor Act, dictates that the swearing-in ceremony is to be conducted on the first Thursday after the tenth day following the declaration of the final results of the election.

The petitioner holds that "the timeline stipulated for the swearing-in ceremony, being 10 days, began counting from Friday, the 14th day of March, 2025 when the Judgment was delivered and the gazette notice affirmed."
