The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has said investigations into rampant cases of abductions in Kenya are ongoing.

The authority’s chairperson Issack Hassan told Members of Parliament on Wednesday that the investigations seek to unravel the persons responsible for abductions.

"As of who is abducting Kenyans, we are still investigating,” Hassan stated during his appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security.

Hassan highlighted that a significant obstacle in the investigation process is that the victims have not been coming forward to provide evidence.

"The challenge has been that the victims are not coming to us to give evidence," he added.

Hassan indicated that a public inquiry might be necessary to address the situation comprehensively, providing a forum where victims and witnesses could present evidence in a structured environment.

“The IG said the Police have not abducted anyone, but we may need to open a public inquiry into this matter," Hassan explained.

Hassan’s revelation follows comments by President William Ruto, who claimed there are no missing persons as all abducted Kenyans have returned home.

"All those who had disappeared or were abducted have been brought back to their homes. I have given clarity that nothing of that nature will happen again,” President Ruto said while speaking during a joint press conference with the Finnish President on Monday.

Recently, IPOA announced that it had completed investigation into the 22 deaths that occurred during the 2024 anti-government protests and forwarded the cases to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review and potential prosecution.
