The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) has appeared to defend the conduct of some police officers during countrywide 'Maandamano' protests held this week.

In a statement released on Saturday, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori condemned what she termed 'acts of lawlessness by some members of the public" which she said culminated in the loss of property and injuries to a number of police officers.

Makori said that while IPOA is investigating cases reported and those undertaken on its own on reported deaths from gunshots, injuries to civilians and police, assault of journalists and arrests of civilians, it is also analysing events that may have obstructed police in executing its core function of protecting life and property.

Makori said IPOA will release a consolidated report with findings and recommendations to various agencies including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and the National Police Service.

She sought to reassure the public that the authority will remain "independent, impartial, fair and apolitical in all its investigations".

At least 9 people have been reported to have died in the latest protests, including four in Mlolongo, two in Kitengela and one in Emali in Makueni County.
