IPOA probing eight police officers over Kisumu shooting

Eight police officers implicated in a fatal shooting incident in Kisumu on Tuesday are being questioned by investigators from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

Kisumu County police commander Alphonse Wambua says the officers were locked up yesterday and IPOA officers have already taken up the matter this morning.

The officers have today been presented for statement taking at the IPOA Kisumu offices awaiting the next course of action as the probe kicks off.

Meanwhile, the two other male victims who were admitted at the Kisumu county hospital successfully underwent an operation to remove the bullets lodged in their bodies.

The other male patient (32) who was admitted at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital is also stable following a similar procedure done on him and one bullet head retrieved from his body.

The family of the deceased girl who was a student at Simeru mixed secondary school is also awaiting a postmortem exercise to be conducted at the Kisumu county hospital where the body is lying.

The shooting incident led to tension in the lakeside city yesterday with protests from locals and leaders demanding action against the officers involved.

Traffic officers were chasing a matatu driver who had defied orders to stop and upon arriving in the Juakali area called for backup to contain a crowd that had already built up in support of the Matatu driver.
