The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has released over Ksh.8.36 billion for payment to the beneficiaries enrolled in the Inua Jamii Program where each elderly person is set to receive Ksh.8,000.

According to Principal Secretary Joseph Motari, out of the Ksh.8.36 billion old persons have been allocated Ksh.5.8 billion, while Ksh.2.1 billion will go to orphans while people living with severe disabilities will get Ksh.302 million.

The monies are the second tranche for the month of March, April, May and June.

Addressing the Press in Kiambu during a spot check in banks, Principal Secretary Joseph Motari said as per the directive from the President, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Senior Citizen remains committed to ensuring the most vulnerable members of the society are cushioned and their livelihood improved.

The PS noted that in Kiambu alone, Ksh.337 million was disbursed to over 42,000 beneficiaries.

He however said that today marked the end of arrears saying the ministry will ensure the elderly receive Ksh.2000 every month without any delays.

At the same time, the PS noted that the Ministry has engaged mobile services provider Safaricom on plans to start a new model of disbursement where the elderly will get their money via M-Pesa.

He further noted that next month, they will start a new enrolment of 500,000 more elderly Kenyans who are not in pension scheme to ensure they also benefit from the Inua Jamii Program.

Senior Citizens who lined up at banks expressed their gratitude to the President saying the money was timely to them as many have suffered due to the delay in disbursement of the funds.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto says the government will henceforth disburse funds for the vulnerable groups on time to ensure they no longer have to wait for long to get their dues.

“If there are people who deserve our support, it is the vulnerable in society,” he said during an Interdenominational Church Service in Taita Taveta County on Sunday.
