Inside plan to introduce number plates for wheelbarrows, carts in Nairobi

This is according to a motion tabled by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai that will introduce requirements for all non-motorised means of transport to be registered.
These include wheelbarrows, rickshaws, handcarts, animal-drawn carts, luggage trolleys, and tricycles.
The initiative, according to Alai, will address congestion and safety concerns caused by the widespread use of these transport modes.
Part of the proposed policies include the introduction of reflective number plates, reflective jackets and insurance coverage to protect against accidents and third-party damages.
He added that these measures would enhance lane discipline and provide a framework for operators to acquire road safety knowledge.
If the motion is approved, the County Assembly will provide a six-month grace period for the operators to comply with the said laws.
Congestion has been a key concern in Nairobi owing to negative effects on the economy such as wasted time and fuel, reduced quality of life, environmental pollution and a decline in the city's aesthetics.
