Imran Okoth loses Kibra MP seat as Peter Orero is declared winner
Orero was declared winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday morning, thereby replacing the outgoing legislator Imran Okoth who was contesting as an Independent candidate.
Shortly after the announcement, Orero thanked his supporters for backing his bid further vowing to diligently serve the people of Kibra while in office.
"I want to thank the people of Kibra for voting for me. I want to bring my knowledge, ability and skills to serve the people of Kibra and to ensure that their policies and aspirations are met," he said.
"I want to urge Kenyans to remain peaceful as we wait for the announcement of the 5th president of this country."
While Peter Orero (ODM) garnered 33,008 votes, footballer MacDonald Mariga (UDA) had 20,049 votes and Imran came third with 18,901 votes.
Other candidates were Karanja Peris Wanjiru - 944 votes, Noah Yusuf -528 votes Malasen Hamida - 408 votes and Obayi Ochieng Erick - 203 votes.
Weeks before the polls Imran, who previously contested under an ODM ticket, was asked by the party's boss Raila Odinga to step down in favour of Orero.
However, Imran vowed that he will be in the race to the end.
The outgoing MP assumed office on an ODM ticket in a by-election held in 2019. This was after his brother, Ken Okoth, who was the area’s Member of Parliament succumbed to cancer.
