Impeachment motion filed against Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo
Nyamira County MCAs have filed an impeachment motion, for the second time, seeking the ouster of Governor Amos Nyaribo from office.
Nominated
MCA Evans Matunda filed the motion, citing grounds of abuse of office and gross
misconduct.
“I beg
to give a notice of a motion to consider debate and approval of the removal of
Honorable Amos Nyaribo, the Governor of Nyamira County from office by way of
impeachment on the following grounds; gross violation of the constitution of
Kenya and other laws and abuse of office and gross misconduct,” Matunda said in
the motion.
A
significant number of Nyamira County MCAs have already signed the motion, with many expressing concern about the alleged exclusion
of Deputy Governor James Gesami Ondicho from county affairs.
“The
truth is that the governor is struggling with the job. Look at what happened when he was asked questions by the Senate; there was nothing at all that he
answered,” MCA Abel Mose said, referring to Nyaribo’s appearance before the
Senate’s Special Funds Committee on Friday.
The committee was
investigating discrepancies in the use of Nyamira County funds for the
financial years 2020/2021, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023.
“I
support the motion because there are no drugs in our hospitals; county
employees are also staging a go-slow,” another MCA added.
Reports indicate that a
section of the ward representatives who oppose the motion, including Rigoma MCA
Gisesa Emmanuel Nyambega, have been removed from their positions in parliamentary
committees.
In October 2023, Governor Nyaribo narrowly avoided impeachment when an attempt to remove him from office fell short of the required two-thirds majority.
The petition had been filed against Nyaribo on grounds of nepotism, favouritism, illegal staff recruitment, and failure to remit statutory dues, among others.
