IEBC official arrested with several unmarked ballot papers in Starehe

A Presiding Officer from one of the
polling stations in Starehe Constituency has been whisked away by police from
angry youth at the Jamhuri tallying center.
The Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official was allegedly found with an unmarked
booklet of election papers in his bag while gaining access to the centre that
was heavily guarded by GSU officers.
Confirming the incident, Central
Police Station boss Fred Abuga said officers had to rescue the Presiding
Officer from the wrath of supporters of one of the candidates in the Starehe Parliamentary
race who were baying for his blood.
Mr Abuga said the IEBC official is
presently being grilled by the officers from the Directorate of Criminal
Investigations (DCI).
For the second day running, there
has been drama and tension at the Jamhuri tallying center pitting supporters of
Jubilee candidate Amos Mwago and those of his main rival Simon Mbugua (United
Democratic Alliance – UDA) as rigging claims take a center stage.
A team of media was on Thursday
evening barred from gaining access to the tallying centre with police at the
gate citing instructions from above as the reason for not allowing newsmen to
access the premises.
