IEBC is a ticking time bomb: Experts say on reconstitution crisis

As debate rages on why the process of appointing new commissioners and constituting the IEBC is dragging, pertinent questions on what the country is losing in the absence of the commission continue to crop up.

Former IEBC Co-ordinator Central Nyanza Region George Oyugi says the delays are suspect.

''...we don't know whether it is a deliberate delay by the executive so that they do things last minute in a rush and we don't want those rush hours," Oyugi noted.

A Key function of IEBC is the delimitation of boundaries every 10 years. It was supposed to have happened in 2024 but the delay in the appointment of commissioners has hindered the process.

"Boundary delimitation will not take place it was supposed to have taken place in 2024 our staff is just getting salaries but doing nothing," the former IEBC coordinator stated.

Banisa Ugunja and Magarini constituencies which have been left vacant, lack representation in Parliament with locals reporting stalled development projects.

11 Wards in the Country are also vacant including Nyamaiya and Nyansiongo wards in Nyamira county, locals are outraged by the lack of representation.

Former insiders say the delay is more political than it appears.

"We have political leaders and parties who want to take care of IEBC so that they do things last minute," Oyugi added.

The Void in the commission is a result of the resignation of the Cherera four and the end of the tenure of other commissioners including former Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.
