IEBC CEO Marjan calls for probe into murder of electoral body’s official in Mombasa
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries
Commission (IEBC) CEO Hussein Marjan Hussein has called for speedy
investigations into the murder of Acting Kilifi Elections Manager Aisha
Abubakar, who was killed at her home in Utange, Mombasa County.
Speaking in Mombasa after attending the burial, Marjan condemned the incident
and the perpetrators behind Aisha’s death.
He said Aisha was a diligent staff who
served the Commission well and rose through the ranks to the position of Acting
County Elections Manager.
“The culprits also stole official materials
and documents; we cannot rule out the possibility that the attack had something
to do with that,” added Marjan.
Mombasa leaders have called on the police
to conduct operations to flush out criminal gangs that have been on the rise in
recent days.
“Kisauni is increasingly becoming an
insecure region and we urge the police and detectives to restore security,” Kisauni
MP Rashid Bedzimba said.
“If we elected leaders have security detail
assigned to us, high-ranking IEBC officials like Aisha ought to have the same
too,” Shanzu MCA Allan Katana said.
According to a police
report, two suspected robbers broke into Aisha’s in the wee hours of Sunday
morning and used a knife to attack her and 18-year-old Khasim Hassan.
“They gained access to
the house by cutting the grills of the kitchen window while armed with crowbar
and knife,” said the report in part.
The suspects, one
wearing a mask, are then said to have cut Aisha on the head above her right eye
and also used a knife to inflict wounds on Khasim’s head.
They then stole
Asiha’s mobile phone, a TV, a sound system, an iPad, and another phone before
fleeing.
Khasim managed to
drive her mother to Premier Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
