I will not be intimidated to be a thief, Governor Kawira tells Meru MCAs
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has
maintained her stand on following procedures in dealing with the Members of
County Assembly (MCAs).
On Monday, Kawira, whose fallout with Meru
MCAs turned ugly last week, said she is ready to respond to any questions from
the ward representatives and finance their projects as long as it is well
documented.
“Let the speaker bring the documents that
shows the amount of money you want. Even if it is Ksh.200,000 or Ksh.200
million, I am ready to give you provided it is anchored in the law. I must have
a written document, something I can show,” Kawira said.
The Governor added that she will not accept
any unwritten deals with the County Assembly, since they might deny it.
“We have met at my home for dinner and
agreed on the ward fund but you have denied it. We met in Mombasa, you denied.
We met with the speaker and at the grassroots but you have denied. Now come
with something that I can present before people, cabinet and other officers,”
she said.
“We must follow the law, even if you make
numerous allegations, Mama’s government is alert. I am not ready to pocket even
a single coin that belongs to Mwananchi. I will not be intimidated to be a
thief,” Kawira added.
The first term Governor insisted that she will disburse funds as long as there are written documents and procedures on the funds required by MCAs and the people that will be held responsible.
On claims that she is unavailable when MCAs
seek audience with her, Kawira urged them to address the Deputy Governor when
they can’t find her.
On October 19, the strained relationshipbetween Kawira and Meru MCAs played out when they walked out while she was
addressing the assembly.
The legislators accused her of being ungracious to requests of holding discussions
with them and disregarding their demands.
This would latter
result into a stone throwing match, prompting police officers to lob teargas
calm the situation.
Kawira would latter
extend an olive branch to the MCAs on Mashujaa day.
"My
hand is open and my government is open for you. I ask that all leaders unclench
their fists. Let's work together, let's move forward together as we make our
people happy because Meru must be happy,” she told the ward reps.
