'I can't calm down': Temparatures flare at JKIA, as passengers stranded after strike

There was an uproar among passengers at JKIA on Saturday, after they were stranded as pilots made good their threat to go on strike following a stalemate with management.

One furious passenger who was due to fly to Ghana to emcee for a wedding, said, "I can't calm down because I'm up here, so you have to come up here with me. It's called emotional intelligence. Deal with me. I gave you my money, you should fly me back to Ghana."

He went on, "You should have thought of me first as your customer. If you have issues with your government, go ahead... My brother is waiting for me to land in Ghana to go emcee a wedding."

Kenya Airways (KQ) CEO Allan Kilavuka has given striking pilots 24 hours to return to work or face disciplinary action.

He said management had spent five hours with all stakeholders on Friday, trying to unlock the stalemate to no avail.

"This illegal strike has really impacted our business," he said.

"What the pilots are doing is spitting on the faces of taxpayers. KALPA is inciting pilots from the comfort of their bedrooms."

KQ pilots, under the larger Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) umbrella, ignored a court order and went on strike in protest of what they termed as neglect of their grievances.

In a statement issued on Friday, KALPA secretary general Captain Muriithi Nyagah said, “KALPA the representative voice of all pilots in the country, Kenya Airways included, wishes to inform members of the public that beginning Saturday, 5th November 2022, from 6.00 am local time, there shall be no Kenya Airways aircraft departing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) flown by a KALPA member."

The KAPLA official said the two parties had not reached an agreement and thus the strike was inevitable.

“We hoped that the Management of the airline would soften its hard stance and engage in a negotiation on the issues raised. However, and as we mentioned at our press conference on November 1, 2022, Kenya Airways Management has not made any meaningful attempt to engage and have these matters resolved,” Capt. Nyagah stated.
