‘I came up with affordable housing plan!’ Raila slams Gov’t execution
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party
leader Raila Odinga has continued to criticise Kenya Kwanza's housing project
and the levy imposed on it saying there is nothing affordable about it.
Mr. Odinga said the biggest problem with the
project lies in the deduction of the housing tax from salaried Kenyans.
Speaking in Kirunga area of North Imenti
Constituency, Meru County, on Saturday, the opposition leader stated that he
was not opposed to the affordable housing project, but merely its execution.
“Hakuna kitu kibaya
kuhusu affordable housing lakini kitu kibaya ni vile wanaendeleza na
kutekeleza, wanaleta kiburi na kifua na hiyo haiwezekani kwa demokrasia,” he
said.
Mr. Odinga added that the project was not new,
claiming to be one of the leaders who crafted it during his time in the Cabinet.
“Mimi ndio nilileta
hiyo mambo nikiwa waziri wa public works and housing na nilienda China, Korea
na Singapore na niko na hiyo mpango, tailor-make each plan for the different
regions not one size fits all...najua siri lakini wacha waanguke kwanza,”
stated the Azimio boss.
He faulted the method used by the government
to raise revenue saying all they need to do is fight corruption.
“Kama chungu
inavuja, hata ukiongeza maji namna gani hawezijaa...deal with corruption within
the system, wacha kuongeza ushuru unaumiza Wakenya,” said Mr. Odinga.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who accompanied
Mr. Odinga alongside other leaders, commended the church terming its recent
stand bold.
“Tunashukuru
viongozi wa kanisa kwa kukiri kwamba serikali ambayo iko sasa haielekezi Wakenya
jinsi ilivyowaahidi wakati muliiunga mkono,” he said.
Mr. Odinga and his entourage had graced a
graduation party for the daughter of Zablon Mathenge Mwariama, his long-time
friend.
