Honda to boost Kenya’s local motorcycle manufacturing

Kenya’s automotive industry is set to benefit from increased local manufacturing after global player Honda announced plans to support the production of key motorcycle parts within the country.

The move aims to strengthen the boda boda sector, which provides livelihoods for thousands of Kenyans.

During a visit to Nairobi’s Honda assembly plant, Honda Vice President Masanori Shimazoe emphasized Africa’s growing role in the industry and Kenya’s strategic position in that expansion. Shimazoe, who also heads the Kumamoto Honda factory—Honda’s largest—stated that the company seeks to expand its global market share from 40% to at least 50%.

Honda’s plans include ramping up production of locally manufactured motorcycle components.

Currently, only 14 out of the 299 required parts are produced in Kenya, but the target is to increase this to 35 by 2027.

The company has also committed to ensuring global certification for Kenyan manufacturers to enhance quality and safety standards.

Shimazoe highlighted Honda’s dual focus on environmental impact and road safety, stating that the company is working to reduce emissions while maintaining strict quality checks to minimize accidents.

He also noted that Honda is increasing sales of both traditional and electric motorcycles, aligning with Kenya’s growing adoption of e-mobility solutions.

Honda Kenya Chairman Dr. Isaac Kalua Green, an environmental advocate, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for sustainable and efficient motorcycles tailored to local conditions.

He underscored Kenya’s progress in adopting innovations to support local manufacturing and improve industry efficiency.

Statistics indicate that one boda boda in Kenya supports about six family members, translating to millions relying on the sector.

To date, Honda Kenya has produced 157,750 motorcycles, impacting approximately one million people through direct and indirect employment.

Dr. Kalua urged the government to provide incentives to private manufacturers to spur industry growth, enhance local production, and reduce import dependence.
