A contingent of armed anti-riot police officers has been deployed to Uhuru Park in Nairobi ahead of a planned parallel Mashujaa Day celebration.

Images seen by Citizen Digital show water canons parked at strategic points in the City Park and officers camping at different points.

A section of the Kenyan youth and activists had planned to converge at the grounds to honour the victims of the nationwide anti-government protests held in June and July 2025 with the prominent one being the Parliament invasion on June 25.

Activist Eric Omondi had taken to X on Sunday morning stating that the officers had blocked all entrances but later granted access to some of the young Kenyans who had arrived at the premise.

Officers have already started lobbying teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.

Meanwhile, Haki Africa's Hussein Khalid has been apprehended while addressing a battery of journalists outside the park's gates.

Amnesty International and several human rights organisations recorded that a total of 61 Kenyans lost their lives during the protests

Amnesty has detailed its investigation by conducting interviews with 23 eyewitnesses and analysing 45 videos and over 100 photographs from the protest day.

The report also revealed that 67 cases of enforced disappearances have been logged this year, with 40 cases resolved so far, leaving 27 still unresolved.

Interior Cabinet Secretary and the current Deputy President nominee Kithure Kindiki has however disputed the numbers as he said that the government has recorded 42 deaths.

Kindiki told the National Assembly National Security Committee on September 26 that the use of brutal force by police officers on the peaceful protesters was justified, arguing that the national security force had to be deployed to protect national critical institutions including the Parliament.

"It is not correct to argue that the police officers cannot use force. If we never applied force on that fateful day we would have been talking about a different Kenya," he said.
