Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned His Highness the Aga Khan, remembering him as a close friend and confidant, a visionary leader and a philanthropist.
In a statement on
Wednesday, Uhuru described His Highness the Aga Khan as more than a
friend—calling him a brother, trusted confidant and partner in their shared
mission to improve lives globally.
"The Aga Khan was
more than just a friend; he was like a brother, a confidant, and a partner in
the mission to uplift the lives of many. Our shared dedication to education,
healthcare, and making the world a better place created a partnership that
lasted for years,” said Uhuru.
Further, Uhuru highlighted
the Aga Khan's outstanding contributions to society, particularly in education
and healthcare, praising him for establishing high-quality schools and
hospitals that have transformed lives not only in Kenya but around the world.
“His visionary leadership
in the healthcare sector has saved countless lives. The Aga Khan University Hospital
and its network of facilities remain a testament to his enduring legacy of
compassion and excellence,” said Uhuru.
The former president also emphasized the Aga Khan's global dedication to
humanity, noting their shared beliefs and collaborative initiatives.
"We worked together
on numerous projects in the education sector. His ability to bring people
together for a cowmen cause was truly remarkable,” he said.
Extending his sympathies
to the Ismaili community worldwide, Uhuru acknowledged the Aga Khan's pivotal
role as a spiritual leader who inspired countless followers, urging those
grieving his loss to honor his legacy by continuing his mission of service and
promoting unity.
“As we say goodbye to
this incredible man,' Kenyatta concluded, let’s recall his strong faith in
humanity's potential for greatness. The positive Impact he had on so many lives
will ensure his legacy endures,” he said.
His Excellency the Aga Khan died
on Tuesday aged 88, leaving millions of followers in mourning across the world.
Prince Karim al-Husseini was
regarded as a direct descendent of the Prophet Mohammed, given nearly
divine-status as the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili sect of Shia Islam.
The Swiss-born philanthropist was
bequeathed the title of Aga Khan aged 20 by his grandfather, who skipped the
line of succession for the first time since the seventh century to appoint a
"young man" of the "new age".
