The Ministry of Health has unveiled the National Guidelines on Workplace Mental Wellness, signaling a significant step towards addressing the pressing issue of mental health in the country's workforce.

The launch, led by Acting Director General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth on behalf of Health Cabinet Secretary Wafula Nakhumicha, took place at the Mathari Teaching and Referral Hospital on Thursday.

Kenya, like many countries around the globe, is grappling with a mental health crisis within its workforce.

Recent data reveals that approximately 3.7 million Kenyan employees, out of a workforce of 24.9 million, are affected by mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, substance use disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar mood disorder.

“These new workplace mental wellness guidelines, developed by the Ministry of Health, emphasize promotion, prevention, care, and support,” said Dr Amoth.

The guidelines will serve as a reminder that wellness is the responsibility of all working employees, who have been encouraged to engage in self-care, develop coping skills, seek social support and care.

On the other hand, employers are expected to create a supportive working environment that connects employees to care services and provides the necessary resources to implement the guidelines.

Kenya, joins the world in proactive action by recognizing the significance of mental health and has aligned its reforms with the Universal Health Coverage Policy and international standards.

The Mental Health Action Plan for 2021-2025 reaffirms Kenya's commitment to mental health, aligning it with the country's economic and sustainable development goals.

Dr. Joyce Nato, from the World Health Organization (WHO), emphasized that all working individuals have a fundamental right to the highest attainable standards of mental health at work, regardless of their type of employment.

Mathari hospital Board Chairman Prof. Lukoye Atwoli congratulated Dr. Amoth and the other partners involved for their unwavering dedication to enhancing mental health.

He highlighted that the national guidelines would provide a substantial boost to the overall national mental health planning process.
