Gov't told to publicize Migingo Island territorial report as puzzle yet to be solved 10 years on

Alila said the report on the survey that consumed tax payers’ money has neither been made public nor implemented by the government. He said Kenyans would want to know whether Migingo Island is in Kenya or Uganda.

Alila, who appeared before the parliamentary committee for Foreign Affairs following his petition regarding Migingo Island in 2014, said they have waited for the government to put the joint survey report public.

He said Kenyans living in Migingo have been subjected to a lot of injustices by Ugandan security guards who currently occupy the island saying that such harassment can only end if the truth is known about jurisdiction of the Island.

The African Human Right Bureau director has appealed to President William Ruto to look at the joint survey report on Migingo Island and make it public to Kenyans.

Alila said it is paradoxical that the area Assistant chief for Migingo Island is a Kenyan but the island is manned by security officers from Uganda because the Ugandan government also claims that the embattled island is within its territory.

The embattled island does neither have a school nor a government owned health facility. In 2018, some of the Kenyans led by the area Assistant chief tried to establish An Early Childhood Education (ECDE) centre at the island but the structure was brought down by the security officers from Uganda.

Kenyan general elections done after every five years have always been conducted at Migingo Island that currently has over 52 voters according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) records.
