Gov’t to rehabilitate Lake Kanyaboli dyke after flooding in Siaya, Busia
The National Government has agreed to dispatch equipment and
personnel to rehabilitate Lake Kanyaboli dyke that burst on Sunday causing
massive flooding upstream in Siaya County and Busia County.
The move follows an appeal by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma on
Tuesday calling upon the state and other agencies to intervene and avert a
looming environmental and humanitarian crisis across the entire Yala Swamp
Ecosystem.
Speaking during a Joint Disaster Committee meeting between
Busia, Siaya and Lake Agro Limited, Otuoma stated that the National Government
through Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has committed to dispatch
National Youth Service personnel and equipment to rehabilitate the dyke.
Busia acting county commissioner Kipchumba Rutto and Alego
Usonga deputy county commissioner Robert Ng’etich assured the affected communities
of quick interventions.
Siaya County Chief of Staff Cyrus Oguna, who represented
Governor James Orengo, said that the joint committee has already identified
areas of intervention that needs to be acted upon to ensure people's lives are
restored and the disaster does not re occur in future.
