Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki,  appeared before the Senate Cohesion Committee on Thursday to shed light on the ongoing border disputes between Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.

Kindiki claims that the problem can be linked to a pattern of land grabbing and fraudulent title deed issuance by dishonest public officials.

“All those who stole land in Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties along the border using advantage of corruption in land offices and corrupt leaders, using influence in government to cause injustice and instability among people will lose the land,” the CS said.

He said there is also the additional problem of double titling of land, which has further fueled the violence.

Kindiki also pointed out that politicians from both counties have played a role in exacerbating the tensions.

“We cannot be using the politics of fighting and physical elimination of each other in the 21st century. That has to stop,” he added.

He noted that some politicians have resorted to inciting communities to violence instead of pursuing innovative approaches to secure votes.

During the hearing, he said the government is poised to provide an official map of the two counties, thereby eliminating overlapping jurisdiction and promoting lasting peace in the region.

“I assure you we will deliver peace on that region and make sure everyone gets their rights and nobody feels oppressed,” he concluded.

The border disputes between Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties have a history that dates back several years and efforts  to resolve these disputes have been ongoing, with the government and local leaders seeking to find a peaceful and equitable solution.
