Thorough investigations have been launched into the frequent fires at Gikomba and other markets in Nairobi to prevent recurrence and protect traders from massive losses, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said.
The Deputy President stated that President William Ruto has ordered investigative agencies to get to the root cause of the infernos, including the recent fire on April 1 in Gikomba that destroyed businesses belonging to over 300 small-scale traders.
Speaking on Wednesday while hosting affected traders at the Official Residence in Karen, Prof. Kindiki noted that genuine concerns had been raised regarding the frequency of the fires, and they are being addressed.
“We must get to the root cause of the fires. The President has directed relevant agencies to investigate these incidents. It doesn’t make sense to imagine that these fires are accidental — they keep happening year in, year out. Investigations are ongoing so we can solve this issue once and for all,” the Deputy President said.
He added that the government will support the traders in re-establishing their businesses as it works with them to find long-lasting solutions to the various challenges they face.
“I have spoken with all your leaders, and we have agreed on the way forward. We will resolve the challenges you have raised,” DP Kindiki assured them.
At the same time, the Deputy President highlighted that the ongoing construction of over 400 modern markets across the country is aimed at dignifying small-scale traders and mama mboga by providing them with decent workplaces equipped with necessary facilities.
“We are very determined to modernize trade and dignify traders so they can operate in places that meet acceptable standards and offer all the requisite amenities, such as water and electricity.
“We have standardized the facilities provided in every market. Each market includes a room for lactating mothers, cold rooms for fresh produce, among other features. We are doing our best to ensure small-scale traders have decent places to work,” he added.
