The national government has launched a Ksh.60 million relief programme for Tana River residents affected by perennial flooding.

The programme was launched by Special Programmes Principal Secretary Ismail Maalim and his ASALS counterpart Kello Harsama who on Monday crisscrossed the county distributing relief food,  mattresses and blankets to residents.

The PSs accompanied, by Garsen MP Ali Wario, Galole MP Said Buya and Bura MP Yakub Adow started the day at Bandi IDP Camp in Garsen where flood victims have pitched camp.

Beneficiaries received food, blankets and mattresses.  Speaking at Majengo, PS Maalim said the govt has invested over Ksh. 6o million in the exercise.

Maalim stressed the importance of the exercise saying "it's a constitutional obligation for the government to provide food assistance to its citizens".

Maalim said over 2 million Kenyans receive food aid from the government.

On his part, Harsama said the government already distributed iron sheets to flood victims in the county including 600 for flood victims in Galole constituency.

Beyond relief,  the leaders took the opportunity to encourage residents to make full use of the government’s available support services including the Social Health Authority (SHA) for access to quality, affordable healthcare, and the NYOTA programme which provides economic empowerment and training opportunities for our youth.
