Gov't explains cause of Friday power outage

The government says it plans to build more infrastructure and power evacuation sites to prevent power disruptions and intermittent outages.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, who visited Mount Kenya’s Regional Control Center in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, said the plan to expand the country’s energy infrastructure will help in smooth power distribution.

"We had a breaker that shuttered in Suswa which is our biggest station in Kenya. Currently, we do not have an alternative evacuation line to the load centres of Nairobi and the Coast and that is why we want to do a line from Gilgil to Thika, Malaa to Konza and eventually to Isinya so that when we have a challenge in Suswa, we can use the alternative," Wachira explained.

He added that Turkwell's power generation and imports from Uganda did not affect western Kenya and northern regions.

"What we lost was basically the Nairobi, Mt Kenya and the Coast region. Western Kenya and North Rift were not majorly affected because Turkwell was able to maintain generation as well as import from Uganda," he added.
