Gov't calls for week-long dialogue to discuss CBC implementation

The Ministry of Education has organised week-long meetings to discuss the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) following its rollout in 2019.

In a notice advertised in the local dailies, the dialogues are meant to engage all stakeholders in the sector while discussing CBC's hits and misses.

The meetings will be held from Friday, March 7, to Thursday, March 13, across all 47 counties. The launch of the dialogue will be presided by Education CS Julius Migos at the Machakos People's Park, Machakos County.

"The dialogues are designed to engage all stakeholders in the education sector regarding the ongoing implementation of the CBC, including the progress, achievements and opportunities arising from the rollout," the notice read in part.

CBC, branded as a game changer in the country's education sector, has faced numerous challenges since its inception.

Primarily, the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) are understaffed, forcing the available teachers to teach subjects they are not specailised in.

Further, schools require diverse learning materials and advanced technology to enhance the quality of learning.

Further, there is need to establish standardised metrics to evaluate the curriculum's effectiveness.

To mitigate the situation, the government has attempted to heavily invest in the sector; pouring over Ksh.61.66 billion in JSS between 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years.
