Gov’t approves 7-10% salary increment for civil servants from tomorrow
President William Ruto has announced that the government has
approved a proposal by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to
increase the monthly dues of the lower cadre of civil servants.
President Ruto, speaking during the unveiling of digital
government services at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on
Friday, disclosed that the salaries will rise by between 7 – 10 per cent effective from
July 1, 2023.
The Head of State added that the move was occasioned by the
tough economic times presently being witnessed by the country, hence the
increment is meant to cushion the workers.
He further stated that the change will be effected to government
employees below the level of a Principal Secretary, alongside teachers,
policemen, as well as military officers.
“I know there is a proposal by the Salaries and Remuneration
Commission for the increase of salaries of different cadres of both civil servants
and other public servants,” said the President.
“They have made a recommendation to us that they want to
increase salaries of civil servants by an average of between 7 and 10 per cent;
that is from office assistants, all the way to people who serve below the PSs.”
He added: “And because of the economic times we live in, we
have approved that salaries of other civil servants can be adjusted beginning tomorrow
(July 1).”
President Ruto however went on to add that he had rejected a
similar proposal by the SRC to also increase the salaries of senior civil servants including himself, the Deputy President, Cabinet Secretaries and
Members of Parliament by an average of 14 per cent.
Other State officers who were poised to benefit from the pay rise proposed by SRC included Principal Secretaries, Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, Leaders of Majority and Minority, Chief Justice, Judges, Magistrates, Governors as well as Chairpersons of Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices.
