The Kenyan Government is stepping up its efforts to achieve industrialisation and job creation goals through the development and operationalization of Special Economic Zones (SEZs), Export Processing Zones (EPZs), and County Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIPs).
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced that the construction of SEZs/EPZs in Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Eldoret, and Busia is 50% complete, with a target completion date of June 30, 2025.
To ensure seamless operations upon completion, the government is fast-tracking the development of critical infrastructure, including access roads, water, electricity, and ICT facilities, while identifying lead investors to spearhead operations.
In a meeting to review the progress of SEZs/EPZs projects, Deputy President Kindiki addressed challenges affecting the construction of other zones, such as Dongo Kundu (Mombasa), Samburu (Kwale), Naivasha, and Njoro (Nakuru).
The meeting was attended by principal secretaries and heads of relevant agencies.
The Government, in collaboration with county administrations, is also advancing the establishment of CAIPs, with one industrial park planned for each county.
The construction of the first cohort of 19 CAIPs is nearing completion, while work on the second cohort of 16 CAIPs has commenced.
Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy beyond physical infrastructure.
This includes production planning, marketing, and stakeholder engagement to ensure value addition for aggregated products.
A review meeting on the progress of the first cohort of CAIPs was chaired by the Deputy President, alongside County Governors, led by the Council of Governors Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi.
Relevant Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and senior officials from both levels of government also participated in the discussions.
