Governors call for dialogue with Controller of Budget over suspension of county bursaries
The governors argue that such responsibility lies with the national government, and they have warned of taking legal action if the directive is not rescinded.
A few days after Dr. Nyakang'o issued the controversial directive to all 47 counties, instructing them to stop allocating bursaries for students, the governors raised concerns. The directive stated that financial assistance for education falls under the purview of the national government, a position the governors have contested.
"Today, we met and agreed that there is no student who belongs only to the county or the national government. We are united in our position, and we will initiate discussions with the Controller of Budget to find a solution."KerichoGovernor Erick Mutai said.
Several governors are now calling for the immediate reversal of the directive, emphasizing that students who rely on this financial aid must be allowed to continue their studies without disruption.
"We want the circular to be set aside, as many students are already in school and their fees have already been paid."Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha said.
In addition, the governors have indicated that if their concerns are not addressed, they will resort to legal action.
Governor Mutai further highlighted the issue of funding, noting that the national government has also failed to release capitation funds, leaving counties to shoulder the burden.
"If they do not listen to us, we will go to court. The poor children must continue their education," he warned.
The governors emphasized that they see no issue with providing financial assistance to needy students, as they are not asking for additional funds from the national government.
"We are simply using the funds already allocated to us," said Governor Jonson Sakaja of Nairobi County. "We will take those children to the national government and let them educate them if needed, but we are not asking for extra funds."
As the matter remains unresolved, the governors are hopeful that constructive dialogue with Dr. Nyakang'o will lead to a solution that ensures continued financial support for students across the country.
