Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Roads
and Public Works executive Danish Onyango to be her new deputy following the
resignation of Oyugi Magwanga on February 26, 2026.
In her statement, Governor Wanga said she nominated Mr. Onyango because of his performance and integrity.
She noted that he has
demonstrated result-based performance and leadership and is able to expand
the county’s road network and connectivity in all the 40 wards.
Magwanga, in his resignation letter, cited
sustained frustration and what he termed deliberate obstruction by the county
leadership that rendered his office inoperative.
He said his decision followed “deep reflection
and consultations with leaders, supporters, and my family,” adding that he had
resolved to step down with immediate effect.
Magwanga, who was elected in 2022 alongside
Governor Gladys Wanga after consultations presided over by the late longtime
ODM party leader Raila Odinga, said he had taken office with a solemn
commitment to serve faithfully and in full obedience to the Constitution.
Besides nominating Magwanga’s replacement, Governor Wanga also
made changes in her Cabinet, where she made new appointments and reshuffled
other officers.
She nominated Elijah Obiny Dede, to serve as the CECM for trade,
industry, tourism, marketing and co-operative development.
Dede previously served as chief officer in the same department
before being moved to Roads and Public Works.
Governor Wanga has also nominated Issack Ongiri as
the county executive for devolution, communication and governance. Mr. Ongiri
was serving as chief officer in the same department.
Trade executive Dr. Joash Aloo was moved to the
Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Development department.
The nominees’ names will be forwarded to the county assembly
for vetting as required by law.
Governor Wanga directed the county secretary to
oversee smooth handing over processes.
