The push to elevate Thika Town to city status has gained momentum after the Kiambu County Government formally submitted the conferment report to the Senate.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, while
addressing the Senate plenary, announced the receipt of the resolution passed
by the Kiambu County Assembly, which proposes that Thika be elevated to a Smart Industrial City.
“To facilitate
the Senate in its consideration of the conferment of city status to Thika
Municipality, I forthwith refer the message to the Standing Committee on
Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations for consideration,” said Speaker
Kingi.
The committee
will now review the report and make recommendations before presenting its
findings to the full House for debate and approval.
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi expressed strong support for the proposal, noting that granting
Thika special city status would be a major step toward restoring its former
industrial prominence.
“Elevating
Thika to city status will revive its lost industrial glory and position it as
the country’s biggest employer in the manufacturing sector,” said Governor
Wamatangi.
Thika, once a
thriving hub for agro-processing and manufacturing, has long been seen as a key
driver of economic growth within the Mt. Kenya region. The push for city status
is expected to attract more investment, boost infrastructure development, and
expand job opportunities.
If approved,
Thika will become the fifth
city in Kenya, joining Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru.
