Governor Wamatangi expands Early Childhood Education in Kiambu with 109 new centers

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi officially opened 109 newly constructed Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres on Monday, a significant boost to education in the county.

The launch, held at the Gitiha ECDE Centre in Githiga Ward, Githunguri Sub-County, comes as the county also begins construction on an additional 130 centers.

Governor Wamatangi emphasised that the new facilities represent a fresh start for a sector that has long been neglected and underfunded.

Each centre is outfitted with modern amenities, such as two classrooms (PP1 and PP2), administrative offices, separate restrooms for teachers and students, and well-equipped play areas.

These centers, he said, are designed to rival private academies in quality and infrastructure.

“Research shows that early childhood education plays a critical role in shaping a child’s lifelong approach to learning. We’ve prioritized upgrading ECDE centers to provide our youngest learners with a nurturing and stimulating environment,” said Wamatangi.

In addition to building new model centres, the Governor stated that the county is renovating existing ones to ensure that all students have access to facilities comparable to those in private kindergartens.

The second phase of the project, which is currently underway, will see 138 additional centres completed by December.

Governor Wamatangi's initiatives go beyond infrastructure improvement. He has also implemented a comprehensive feeding programme to increase school attendance and improve learning outcomes.

Every morning, children receive a nutritious bowl of porridge, along with eggs three times a week and milk.

This initiative has already increased enrolment from 32,000 to over 39,000 learners.
