Governor Muthomi Njuki tells off Mt.Kenya politicians plotting new parties
Speaking in Meru at a cultural event that brought together Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties Governor Njuki said it would be shameful that other parts of the country are thinking about developing their regions as reports from the larger Mt. Kenya region focus on political squabbles and how to solve them.
According to the second-term governor, it is premature for regions to scheme how to start carving out political outfits now, yet there is much to be done on the development front.
“There was a time we came up with a political party 6 months to the election and it went ahead to win key positions, including members of parliament. Where is the hurry now? Njuki noted.
Governor Njuki also told off former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom he accused of undermining the government and working to isolate the people of Mt. Kenya from development.
He said it is unfortunate that the region fought extremely hard to win government in the run-up to the 2022 election only to be asked to shun it two years into the marriage.
“It cannot be that the report the NIS is giving about our region is firefighting every day. That is where money meant for development will go. We need to be strategic. Other regions are getting reports of development.” Said Governor Njuki
He has also called for the unity of the two counties in approaching government and asking for a share of development, saying their strength is in their coming together.
For weeks now Gachagua has been hosting delegations at his Wamunyoro home in Mathira, Nyeri County, in what allies say have been meetings to shop for a political vehicle ahead of the 2027 general election.
He has termed the meetings as consultative as he designs his political future as strategy has drawn mixed reactions from political leaders in the region, with some challenging him to tone down the political rhetoric.
Amid talks of new alliances, Gachagua also met NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua on Saturday at her home in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.
