Government will employ 20,000 interns every year, Ruto announces
During the signing of performance contracts for Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries on Tuesday, Ruto said the plan to employ interns is not only aimed at creating job opportunities but to fulfil the pledge made five years ago.
“On internship this time round we must keep our commitment, we have already engaged the private sector, we have agreed government is going to deliver progressively to 20,000 internships every year, the private sector have committed to me that they would deliver up to 50,000 every year, we want to see how we can grow this to 100,000,” Ruto said.
The president further asserted that the government will heed its pledge, unlike previous instances where the same was promised but not delivered.
“We are looking forward to working on industrial attachments. Again the ministry concerned we have agreed on what to do, this was our intention 5 years ago but it was not delivered because of the old culture of making commitments that we didn’t have any intentions to keep,” he said.
The Head of State added that the government internship opportunities would form a ground for the interns to apply the skills learnt in class in job markets.
“We give a chance to many young people coming out of college and universities to practice what they have learnt either for a year or two years, acquire some experience and find their way into employment and also into the market.”
The Public Service Commission (PSC) had earlier announced 8,000 internship opportunities for graduates under the Public Service Internship Program (PSIP).
The commission further stated that for one to be eligible for the internship, they had to provide requisite documentation of a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
