Gov't steps up flood relief efforts after 12 people killed, 3,970 households displaced
PS Omollo paid a visit to Lunyofu Primary School in Bunyala Sub-County, which is home to over 500 displaced families.
He oversaw the distribution of critical relief supplies such as rice and beans, blankets, and medical kits.
PS Omollo addressed the devastation caused by floods, which affected over 3,000 households in Busia alone, and reaffirmed the government's commitment to long-term solutions.
“We are focused on long-term interventions, including the extension of dykes and the construction of an upstream dam to regulate water flow and support irrigation and household use,” said Dr. Omollo.
Later, the PS visited Kisumu County's Ogenya Displaced Persons Camp, which houses 1,973 households.
He reviewed health surveillance measures implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Health to prevent outbreaks of waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
PS Omollo also discussed long-term flood mitigation strategies with local leaders, emphasizing improved early warning systems, enhanced drainage infrastructure, and public education on flood risks.
Recognising the impact of climate change, Omollo encouraged residents to participate in initiatives like the Chief's Climate Action Day, which takes place on the first Friday of each month, as well as to embrace tree planting to combat environmental degradation and address food security.
The ongoing floods have displaced over 3,970 households, disrupted transportation and agriculture, and killed 12 people, with one still missing.
Despite the challenges, Dr. Omollo commended the multi-agency response team, including the National Disaster Operations Center and the Kenya Red Cross, for their swift interventions.
PS Omollo also responded to fishermen's concerns about recent arrests, assuring them that appropriate steps are being taken to improve how such cases are handled.
He further encouraged residents to register for the Taifa Care universal health program, which provides affordable healthcare access regardless of income.
The PS was accompanied on his tour by Budalangi MP Hon. Raphael Wanjala, Kisumu Women Representative Hon. Ruth Odinga, Muhoroni MP Hon. Onyango K'Oyoo, and Busia County Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga.
As the rains are expected to stop soon, Dr. Omollo urged residents to remain vigilant and follow government safety instructions, including avoiding dangerous areas like unstable dams, roads, and bridges.
He also called on parents and guardians to prioritise children’s safety during the school holidays, especially in flood-prone areas.
