GMOs are safe, women will not grow beards – President Ruto asserts
President William
Ruto has sought to reassure Kenyans that GMO
foods are perfectly safe for consumption, dismissing recent claims made to the
contrary by a section of rival political leaders.
This comes after Roots
party leader Prof. George Wajackoyah last month alleged that Kenyan men who consume GMO products will develop breasts while women will grow beards.
“Saa hizi mnaambiwa mambo ya GMO…Mexico wamekataa mambo ya GMO maanake
walifanya research, wanaume karibu mia tano huko Mexico walimea matiti kwa kula
hiyo GMO na wanawake wakamea ndevu,” said Wajackoyah on December 26, 2022.
“Hiyo mambo ya GMO nayo tumekataa, lakini ikiwa mtakula hiyo GMO,
wanawake watamea ndevu na wanaume watamea matiti.”
However, according to
President Ruto, these are mere rumours as scientists all over the world have
reportedly proven that GMOs do not have such kind of ridiculous side effects on
the human body.
The Head of State
went on to state that, matter of factly, he himself has been consuming GMO
foods and is yet to witness such changes on his person.
“Mimi kama kiongozi wa
nchi, siwezi kuhatarisha maisha ya wananchi walionichagua. Mimi mwenyewe, I’m a
scientist. Every scientist in Kenya anakubali ya kwamba GMO haina matatizo
yoyote. South Africa, Marekani ni 100 per cent GMO,” he said.
“Naskia wengine
wakisema sijui wamama watamea ndevu na nini…Hiyo ni propaganda ya watu ambao
hawataki tuwe na uwezo wa kuzalisha chakula ya kutosha. Mimi mwenyewe nimekula
chakula ya GMO, mimi nimemea matiti?”
He further stated
that the fears against GMO are unfounded since most of the food the country has
been importing over the years has contained a little bit of it anyway.
“Ile chakula yote
ambayo tumekuwa tukiagiza hii miaka yote, tayari iko na GMO. Ile KEBS wanasema
ni it must be less than 1 per cent. Na hiyo tunalipa 30/40 per cent more,” he
stated.
