Global luxury brand Gucci wants to set up factory in Kenya – Kindiki

Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that over 300 companies, including renowned global luxury brands such as Gucci, have shown strong interest in establishing operations at the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park in Mavoko, Machakos County.

According to Kindiki, the park will focus on processing hides and skins into premium leather goods, including shoes, bags, and accessories, giving a significant boost to Kenya’s economy.

Speaking at his official Karen Residence during a consultative forum with Isiolo County leaders, KIndiki emphasized that the park's completion could increase the leather sector's contribution to the national economy from Ksh. 10 billion to Ksh. 150 billion annually.

“Industries that use leather to make leather products are now angling to set up shop in Kenanie. We have over 300 applicants in the expression of interest including top-notch global leather product companies like Gucci which make designer bags… they want to come and set up there. That is how you transform a country," Kindiki said.

He went on, “You don’t transform a country by throwing hate, division and tribalism. You develop a country by saying ‘how do you transform the resources that God has given us into the wealth and distribute it to many people, especially those at the bottom of the pyramid.’”

Gucci manufactures its products in several countries, primarily in Europe with key locations for its factories being Italy, France and Spain.

Once operational, the Kenanie industrial park is expected to serve as a comprehensive value-addition hub, processing raw hides into leather and manufacturing finished products. According to the government, this initiative is expected to boost local production, create jobs, attract foreign investment, and elevate Kenya's profile in global trade.

Kindiki further noted that the park’s completion would create such a high demand for hides and skins that it would exceed the local supply, presenting a significant opportunity for local manufacturers and international investors alike.

“It is going to offtake all the hides and skins from Kenya. Demand will not be enough. Price of hides and skins will go up,” he said.

The Deputy President also revealed that final preparations for the industrial park, including road tarmacking, power upgrades, and the completion of a water treatment plant, are progressing. The Kenanie Leather Industrial Park is expected to open by the end of the year.

The Kenanie Leather Park, which is set on an over 500-acre piece of land, is aimed at providing a one-stop shop for leather, footwear, leather goods and allied industries.

Applications for space at the park by potential investors is reportedly ongoing.
