Gladys Boss: No 'civil war' in Judiciary vs Executive, just democratic checks and balances

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei speaking on Citizen TV's JKLIve Show on January 17, 2024.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei has dismissed talks of a civil war between the Executive and Judiciary, emphasising that criticism of government bodies is a natural part of democratic governance.

Speaking on Citizen TV's JKLive Show on Wednesday, Shollei highlighted that the Kenya Kwanza administration's recent criticism of the Judiciary does not translate to an all-out war between the two arms of government and should not be perceived as such.

To further get her point across, Shollei highlighted that the Legislature has been subject to frequent criticism in the past, with even politicians themselves being targets.

"There is no civil war between Kenya's Judiciary and the Executive. Various bodies of government are constantly criticised. The legislature has been criticised several times, even politicians are constantly criticised," she told show host Jeff Koinange.

"Many times ministers  come to Parliament and we criticise them but there is no time you've heard the Executive say that they've been attacked."

She added that the Judiciary should use the criticism as a catalyst for improving its operational capacities.

"I think Judiciary should be able to embrace that (criticism). It should be a time for them to reflect and think about where they are going wrong," said Shollei.

"They should ponder on whether they need to change some things or whether they are serving Kenyans in a manner that is satisfying or not. So it should be a time of reflection. I don't think there is any criticism."

In the last couple of weeks, President William Ruto and his allies have trained their guns on the Judiciary accusing some judges of graft while issuing court orders that were affecting capital projects.

This has drawn the ire of the opposition, which insists that all three arms of government should operate independently, free from threats and intimidation from the Executive.
