Gilgil MP urges CS Murkomen to intervene after 5 killed in trailer accident at Kikopey

Her plea comes in the wake of a road accident involving a truck in the Kikopey area of Gilgil, where five lives were lost on Sunday night.

In a statement on X, Wangari directed her appeal to CS Murkomen, emphasizing the urgent need to curb accidents in the specified region.

“Kipchumba Murkomen, this section needs attention. Too many lives lost!” she said.

Confirming the details, Wangari revealed that the incident occurred when a truck driver lost control and crashed into individuals at a local entertainment joint who were enjoying a game of pool.

“What has happened at Kikopey is heartbreaking. They were all enjoying a beautiful Sunday evening, not knowing a dark cloud was about to engulf their space. I am deeply saddened, and I pray for the families involved. May God's grace be with all of them,” she wrote.

The incident follows a joint operation conducted by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) on December 2, targeting unroadworthy vehicles nationwide. 

Transport CS Murkomen ordered a crackdown on private vehicles operating as public service vehicles (PSVs) as part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations and bring order to the public transport subsector.

"Joint NTSA NPS road safety enforcement exercise kicks off across the country, following a directive on illegal PSV's by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads and Transport, Hon. Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen," NTSA stated in a release.

The move comes after NTSA reported in November that 3,609 lives have been lost so far through road accidents in 2023, covering the period from January to October.
