Gathoni Wamuchomba: I will do my work without fear
This after she is said to have voted against the contentious Finance Bill 2023 on June 14 when it was presented before the National Assembly for debate.
Her stand against the bill while being a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MP has seemingly put her under fire from party members and those allied to the government.
She has dismissed the Finance Bill as “punitive, oppressive and scandalous”.
Speaking during a Farmers Field Day in Githunguri, Kiambu County on Saturday in the presence of President William Ruto, MP Wamuchoma asserted that she will act on her legislative role and deliver to her constituents.
"Nawashukuru sana wakulima wangu kwa kunishikilia, kwa kuniombea na mimi ninaapa ya kwamba nitafanya kazi yangu kama mjumbe bila kuogopa na bila kuingiza baridi," she said.
Taking the lectern, President Ruto tested the waters to establish whether Githunguri residents concur with MP Wamuchomba's stance.
He further urged the residents to back the bill, stating it bears a deliberate plan to help deaden the tough economic burden.
"Nasikia ati nyinyi watu wa Githunguri hamtaki mambo ya housing. Hawa vijana wote barabarani mtatoa wapi kazi ya kuwapatia," said Ruto.
"Wabunge wote wamepiga kura kusema ya kwamba wacha tupange ajira ya hawa vijana mpaka wabunge wa upinzani wamekubali kwamba mpango wetu uko sawa na si tuendelee na hio barabara."
The bill sailed through the Second Reading stage, with 176 Members of Parliament supporting it against 81 who opposed it.
The Bill is now set for the Committee of the Whole House stage, where a Committee will sit to consider the Bill clause by clause.
At the Committee of the whole House stage, any proposed amendments are made and a vote taken on each.
It will then proceed to the report stage where the House will also vote on the report. Members are allowed to move the House to resolve into a Committee again to reconsider any contentious clauses in the bill.
If the members vote in one accord, the bill passes to a third reading where the final vote is taken and if passed, it will be presented to the President for assent.
