Gachagua warns 6 county police bosses over smuggling of bhang, ethanol
Speaking during a meeting with top security officers from 47 counties at his official Karen residence on Wednesday, Gachagua blamed security officials from Kajiado, Migori, Busia, Bungoma, Marsabit and Isiolo counties for lack of vigilance in taming entry of the drugs at the nation's entry points.
The second-in-command said that contraband goods and the aforesaid drug substances are gaining easy access into the country, questioning the integrity of the officers manned at the borders.
"The border points of Namanga and Loiktoktok are entry points of ethanol and other contraband goods, there are challenges at the entry point in Isibania, the Moyale entry point is responsible for the amount of bhang that is in the country," he said.
"Either the officers there have slept on duty or they are part of the problem."
While warning the officers of dire consequences, Gachagua said that no laxity would be condoned in the fight against the drug menace in the nation.
He called for watertight sealing of all hotspot borderpoints to avert a spike in the use of the drugs that he said erode the societal fabric.
"In our meeting this morning we have asked the IG (Inspector General) to give you a chance. Many of us were of the idea that we need to make changes," noted Gachagua.
"You have to pull up your socks...You have the law on your side and you simply don't do what you need to do."
He vowed to onboard officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) and all respective bodies to put a cap on the vice.
Since last year, Gachagua has been at the frontline of the war against drug and alcohol abuse which has been a deeply rooted menace.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has also taken action into the debacle, threatening to dismiss officers found to be abetting the problem.
