Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for
Citizens Party (DCP) is set to be officially launched on June 3, 2025, at the
Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.
This was revealed by the party’s Secretary General Hezron
Obaga in a booking letter addressed to the facility’s management on May 20, 2025.
According to Mr. Obaga, the event is likely to be attended by
at least 5,000 people – among them party members, supporters and invited guests
- and will run from 8am to 5pm on the said day.
“We plan to use the facility for speeches, interactive
sessions and performances aimed at unveiling our vision, manifesto and
leadership to the Kenyan public,” stated the party SG in the letter.
“We kindly request information on the availability of the
venue on the stated date, the booking procedure, and the associated costs and
requirements.”
The facility’s management, in response, slapped the party with
a Ksh.3.7 million bill for the hiring of the gymnasium for the party launch.
The official launch comes after the unveiling of the party which took place May 15, 2025 at the party’s headquarters in Lavington,
Nairobi.
The initial unveiling gave the public a glimpse into the
party’s identity and the leadership, although chaos ensued as
goons interrupted the proceedings, forcing security personnel to intervene.
Gachagua, during the said event, emphasized the party’s
commitment to listen to Kenyans, as was seen in the party’s logo which depicts
a hand cusped below an ear to signify the aspect of listening as indicated by their
slogan “Skiza Wakenya (Listen to Kenyans).”
The former DP noted that the party was forged on
the backdrop of the need to provide better leadership for Kenyans and pull them
out of the long-standing problems of poor governance.
"Kenyans have boldly told us they have a
solution to the problems facing them. Kenyans have asked us to start a party
which will form a government by the people for the people," he noted then.
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was named
as the interim Deputy Party leader, with David Mingati as the Chairperson.
Other notable politicians who were awarded roles
in the new outfit included former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi
(National Organizing Secretary), former Laikipia Woman Representative Cate
Waruguru (National Women's Leader), and former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi (Deputy
Party chair of strategy).
The other officials are; Hezron Obaga (Secretary General), Hannah
Mutua (Treasurer), Andrew Kiplimo Muge (Director of Elections), Maina Kamanda (Chairperson
of the Council of Eminent Persons) and Alex Khamasi (National
Coordinator-Counties).
