Gachagua reads mischief in lack of IEBC as 2027 polls near

Impeached DP Rigathi Gachagua chairs a multi-agency meeting on September 10, 2024.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faulted the absence of a properly constituted Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Nearly two years after the retirement of commissioners led by their Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, the country does not have proper representation in the electoral body.

This has since hampered the process of conducting by-elections in wards and constituencies lacking legislators and demarcation of boundaries.

Speaking in a church service on Sunday, Gachagua said the lack of commissioners taints the credibility of the 2027 General Elections.

“An election is as credible as the process. The Krigler report recommended the elections commission to be in place three years before polls. Now we have nearly 2 and a half years without IEBC and people can read mischief,” said the former DP.

Gachagua also called for an urgent reconstitution of the IEBC, ‘so that the process can be as credible as the outcome.”

In a separate function, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also slammed President William Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula for ‘tactically delaying’ rthe econstitution of IEBC.

Kalonzo claimed that the government, through proxies, moved to court to block Azimio’s candidate Koki Muli from being part of the panel supposed to reconstitute IEBC.

The lack of IEBC has not only raised concerns from elected leaders, but also members of the Judiciary.

Supreme Court judge Isaac Lenaola recently criticised the government and the opposition for failure to appoint commissioners.

“How can a country like ours stand on her feet if we do not have an electoral commission? Elections are in 2027, this is 2024, when will this commission be prepared?” he posed.
