Gachagua is among leaders responsible for violent protests in 2024 - MP Koech claims

Belgut MP Nelson Koch speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on January 20, 2025

Belgut Member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech has claimed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is responsible for the violent anti-government protests witnessed in 2024.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Monday, the legislator alleged that Gachagua was among politicians who orchestrated the mayhem during the protests, adding that charges have been approved by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

"The only demonstration done by the young people was one, the other one was executed by politicians including the former Deputy President and the DPP has approved charges," he said on Daybreak Show.

"The DPP last week approved charges of three MPs and one other person so we will then be told what happened but in my view the way it happened, the people who came were not young people."

At the height of the protests in June 26, 2025, Gachagua blamed the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for the chaos, calling for the resignation NIS Director General Noordin Haji

Gachagua faulted him for overseeing what he described as a decline in the agency's effectiveness under his stewardship.

"I sympathise with President Ruto because this information was not available to him. NIS is mandated to provide such information and that is where the problem is; we have a dysfunctional NIS that has exposed the President, the government and the people of Kenya," said Gachagua.

"Noordin Haji must take responsibility for the deaths that have occurred, the mayhem witnessed and for failing Ruto, the government and Kenya by not doing his job and advising correctly. He must not just take responsibility but resign from that office and allow the president to pick a competent DG"

The matter has sparked tensions and political blame across the political divide, as leaders in the Kenya Kwanza government have fingered the ousted DP while Gachagua and his allies have maintained that the State should take the blame.
