Francis Muthaura speaks on his health following heart surgery
Former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura has opened up about his
health following a heart surgery years ago as a result of a blocked
heart vessel.
In a new interview with Royal Media Services Editorial Director Linus
Kaikai, the 77-year-old describes being healthy as “sheer luck,” saying “sometimes
you are encouraged by the will of God. Somehow, I have been very lucky having
gone through various tests in life and God helped me overcome.”
In July 2009, the then Public Service head who was also the Secretary to
the Cabinet spent days at a South African hospital after being flown out to treat
myocardial infarction.
“The heart was taken and put on the side; they were trying to fix a
bypass, for one and half hours, and I recovered,” he describes the procedure.
“When I came back, I was supposed to go back after three months and when
I went they said the bypass had failed. They were surprised the heart had taken
an alternative route which was quite efficient.”
He says another blood vessel developed and replaced the bypass, adding “That
is an act of God, I’m not going to say anything else. It’s almost like a
miracle.”
Asked what he does to stay healthy, Muthaura says he still takes drugs
to avoid the possibility of having blood vessel blockages.
