Politician and prominent social media influencer Francis Gaitho was on Thursday formally charged with false publications and cyber harassment.

Gaitho, who was arrested on Wednesday, faced these charges under the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act No. 5 of 2018.

According to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Gaitho is accused of intentionally publishing false information on social media on July 15, 2024, at around 2pm, with the intent that the data would be perceived as authentic.

Additionally, he is alleged to have published false information about Jairus Onkundi Morwabe, causing him apprehension or fear of violence, as well as potential damage or loss to his property.

Gaitho pleaded not guilty to the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki and was released on a Ksh.30,000 cash bail.

The case is set to be mentioned on August 1, 2024 for pre-trial.
