Four shot dead after attempt to steal guns, free suspects at police station in Migori
Four people were shot dead on Thursday evening in Migori County during a dramatic invasion of Isebania Police Station by armed goons.
According to
a police report on the 6.30pm incident, a rowdy mob driving in a pick-up car arrived at
the police station escorting the body of a man that was being moved by police
from St. Akidiva Mindira Mabera Hospital mortuary.
Upon arriving
at the station, the goons are said to have unleashed machetes and stones which
had been stashed in the pickup and went ahead to invade the station.
"They
smashed the windows of the station armoury, OCS office and other offices with stones. They started
destroying the gates of the cells demanding the release of all prisoners in custody," reads the report
in part.
Police officers were then forced to use live ammunition after the group overrun the report office, and armoury and were now headed for the cells to apparently free the locked-up inmates.
"Unfortunately this resulted in the death of 4 unidentified goons," adds the police report.
According to police in Migori, the attack was premeditated and three suspects have been linked to the incident. They have been identified as Peter Hamisi Chacha, John Musa and Nsato alias Manywele, who is reported to have been driving the pick-up full of stones.
Police were forced to use tear gas and fire blanks at the goons to disperse the defiant mob from the police station.
One police officer who was guarding the armoury sustained injuries on the right eye and other bodily injuries after being beaten by the mob.
The bodies of the four suspects gunned down at the station were moved to St. Akidiva Mindira Mabera Hospital mortuary.
