Detectives at the Serious Crimes Unit on Friday arrested four
Lang’ata-based Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers for allegedly
abducting a man and forcefully obtaining money from him.
According to police reports, the suspects Tom Otieno, Antony
Mwanza, Cornelius Wambua and Kennedy Odero waylaid the victim on February 6,
2022 at the NextGen mall, at around midday.
The suspects are said to have forcefully bundled the victim
into a Subaru, as he waited for a taxi along Mombasa Road, during the incident
which lasted for approximately 2 hours.
“Whilst in the vehicle, the in-charge
Corporal Tom Otieno, forcefully transferred Ksh. 40,000 from the
victim’s M-Pesa account to his Mpesa account. They then proceeded to the
victim’s apartment where they took a further USD 2,400 (Ksh. 272, 260) from
him, before dumping him at Choma Zone located at Total petrol station along
Mombasa Road,” the DCI said in a statement.
The victim moved to report the incident the next day at Akira
police station only to find the vehicle he had been bundled into at the
premises. He soon after rushed to the Serious Crimes Unit at the DCI’s
headquarters.
“Investigations were launched immediately and the serious crimes
detectives established that the vehicle indeed belonged to DCI Lang’ata. All
the four officers have since been arrested and identified positively by the
victim, in an identification parade conducted this evening at the DCI
headquarters,” the DCI added.
The DCI similarly stated that actions by the rogue officers were isolated and did not, in any way, reflect the mandate of the sleuth’s
agency to serve and protect the people of Kenya. The DCI likewise added that
stern action will be taken against any law enforcement officers found guilty of
committing crimes in the line of duty.
“Any Kenyan who may have unfortunately suffered in the hands of
the four, is urged to immediately report at the Serious Crimes Unit
headquarters for action,” the DCI added.
