Founder of HBCU Green Fund lauds Kenya’s efforts to host Climate Summit

Felicia Davis, representing HBCU, has been at the forefront of the climate discussion and attended Africa Climate Week in Gabon, an SDG conference in Togo, and a Youth Climate Conference in Uganda in 2022.
HBCU also hosted a virtual Pre-COP27 Africa & Diaspora Conference in advance of COP27 and supported a delegation of nearly 30 people at COP27 in Sham El Sheik.
This year, HBCU has eight representatives from its network attending the Africa Climate Summit and Africa Climate Week to promote the virtual PreCOP28 Conference, which will be held online from October 26 to 29.
"In addition to supporting climate community-based projects across sub-Saharan Africa, HBCU connect this work to our projects and advocacy in the US," she added.
"We will also attend Climate Week NYC and its hosting its 3rd annual BIPOC Climate Justice Dialogue in person in collaboration with Donors of Color Network and Columbia University Climate School and Columbia World Projects,"
HBCU advocates for debt relief and restructuring for Africa, increased philanthropic funding and, increased investment in sustainable development.
Analysts say a united African voice could generate momentum for a series of key gatherings, including the G20 meeting in New Delhi this weekend, ahead of a crunch UN climate summit starting in November.
Africa attracted only two percent of global spending on renewables over the last decade, according to the leaders' statement.
But it said the continent would need a "tenfold increase in the finance capital flowing" into renewables in the next seven years, some $600 billion, to achieve the aim of boosting renewables from 56 gigawatts (GW) in 2022 to at least 300 GW by 2030.
Efforts at the summit to up investment in renewables were given a boost on Tuesday, with the United Arab Emirates pledging $4.5 billion to accelerate Africa's switch to clean energy.
